Paula's story

We caught up with former TLI student Paula recently.  Paula completed her BA (Hons) Professional Practice with The Learning Institute in 2017.

Name: Paula

Course: BA (Hons) Professional Practice

Year of graduation: 2017

Tell us a bit about what you are doing now?

Since finishing the degree I have a new role as a contact supervisor with social services.

How did you find the process of returning to education/study?

Returning to education as a mature student was more of a psychological matter, self-doubt and lack of confidence accompanied by can I do it? Once over this barrier returning to education was relatively easy.

How has your life changed since you graduated?

I was a teaching assistant in a primary school, I now have a job in social services as a contact supervisor which I love. Doing the degree gave me new knowledge and confidence that enabled me to get this job.

What did you enjoy most about studying for your degree?

The autonomy of choosing the topics for discussion. Topics that interested me and where new knowledge would assist me in my role at work.

What was your biggest challenge during your study and how did you overcome it?

The biggest challenge was juggling work, study and having a family. I found making a timetable really helped overcome the issues of dividing my time up.

What’s the one piece of advice you would give to someone thinking about going back to education?

Believe in yourself, you can do it, there may be barriers to your learning, however, you can and will overcome them.
