Secondary Teacher Training
Our Secondary School Centered routes lead to the award of Qualified Teacher Status and PGCE.
School-based routes are a great way to gain the qualifications and practical skills which potential trainees need to become a teacher. It allows those who have just finished a degree, or have been working in a career for many years to combine teacher training with learning on the job.
Entry Criteria and How to Apply
Secondary Teacher Training entry criteria:
- GCSEs in English and Mathematics at grade 4 or above
- Degree at 2:2 or higher in a relevant subject*
- Preferably Recent School Experience
- Successful passing of Professional Skills Tests
- Satisfactory Enhanced DBS, Prohibited List and Health Checks
We can offer equivalency tests in English and Maths. The equivalency enables candidates to meet the entry requirements for our programmes in regard to GCSEs. However, we encourage all potential teachers to pursue full GCSEs in these subjects for their own professional development.
*Candidates who apply with a degree different from the subject in which they will train to teach will be required to provide additional evidence of subject knowledge i.e. A levels, Diplomas, relevant experience. Following a successful interview a future trainee may also be asked to complete a Subject Enhancement Course (SKE) before the start of the Teacher Training programme. Secondary Training Bursary Course Overview
The course will start on Friday 6th September 2019. You will spend most of your first 2 weeks undertaking central training in our training room in Roche and Plymstock School. On completion of induction training, all trainees start their main school placement.
For the majority of training weeks, trainee teachers are in their school placement from 4 days a week with one day reserved for General Professional Study days (GPS) and subject focused days, which take place at Plymstock School or in your placement school.
All trainees need to undertake a second school placement. This normally happens from February half term until Easter. After the Easter holidays, trainees are back in their main placement.
In The Learning Institute we believe a friendly and happy school environment constitutes creative and supportive learning platform for trainees. We work together with successful candidates in finding the right school for them to complete their training.
All trainees are assigned a Subject Tutor, who mentors and oversees subject training and trainee progress. Each trainee also works closely with a Subject Lead and a Visiting Tutor, who provide additional guidance.
