Teaching & Learning

This two-year course provides an in-service career pathway for teaching assistants and other support staff working or volunteering in an education context. It is a school-centred programme based at institutions in Cornwall and Somerset.

There are two possible pathways:

• An FdA for those wishing to prepare for primary teaching or early years professional status

• An FdA for those wishing to prepare for secondary teaching in a range of vocational and applied subjects - contact the providers for details

This course provides students with the skills, knowledge and insight to enable them to make a valued contribution to the educational, social and emotional well-being of children in a range of supportive contexts. We welcome applications from experienced mature students.

South West teaching centres include:
Callington Community College, Callington, Cornwall
Newquay Tretherras School, Newquay, Cornwall
Helston Community College, Helston, Cornwall
Victoria Commercial Centre, Roche, Cornwall
Taunton Academy, Somerset
Blue School, Wells, Somerset

Career Opportunities
This course represents a substantial step toward acquiring a full Honours degree through an additional one-year full-time or two-year part-time Top-up course. This may subsequently provide a route into teaching through a PGCE or GTP programme.

What is a Foundation Degree?
A Foundation degree is the equivalent of the first two years of an Honours degree and we at The Learning Institute offer full-time Foundation Degrees, which take two years to complete and consist of academic study integrated with relevant work-based learning.

Foundation Degrees allow students to use their current work experience (paid or voluntary) as a foundation on which to base their studies The Foundation Degree is delivered at Levels 4 and 5, below is an example, but not comprehensive, list of qualifications and their academic levels in order for you to see where our programmes fit:

Level 1 - Not usually formally measured, although you can have Adult Literacy and Numeracy at this level.

Level 2 - GCSEs, NVQ2, Adult Literacy and Numeracy

Level 3 - AS & A Levels, NVQ3, Foundation or Access Courses, European or International Baccalaureate, BTEC, GNVQ

Level 4 - NVQ4, Completion of Year 1 of a Foundation or Honours Degree

Level 5 - Completion of Year 2 of an Honours Degree, completion of a Foundation Degree

Level 6 - Completion of an Honours Degree (e.g. BSc (Hons), BA (Hons)).

Once the two years have been successfully completed students can use the Foundation Degree as a stand-alone qualification. Alternatively students may wish to complete a ‘top-up’ year through us, or another University level Institution, which will convert their Foundation Degree in to a full Bachelors Degree.
