Ofsted impressed with The Learning Institute

Ofsted visited The Learning Institute in March 2009, and have given us a grading of good with outstanding features!

Some of the key strengths they highlighted were:

The attention given to the personal well-being of all trainees

The quality of the training and the achievements of trainees on the 14-19 courses

Trainees' understanding of current educational developments

Employment rates for all courses

Of particular note to them was our 14-19 Diploma courses:

"The Learning Institute offers a distinctive provision including the only vocational teacher training in the region. The provision is matched very carefully to clearly identified local and regional needs and the provider is working hard to establish itself as a specialist provider of teacher training in vocational subjects and the 14-19 diplomas."

They were also impressed with the level of teaching that PGCE students gained:

"...some trainees' explanations of the approaches they use to differentiate their lessons, monitor students' learning and adjust their teaching accordingly are exemplary."

Foundation Degree students celebrate in style!

Foundation students at The Learning Institute came together on Sunday 19th July to celebrate the completion of their two-year degree. They came from all parts of Cornwall – from Penzance to Pensilva, St Ives to Saltash so it was the first time since they began their course that they were all together again.

The event happened at Callington Community School, the headquarters of The Learning Institute and was a chance for family and friends to congratulate them and share in their celebrations.

The students are mostly teaching assistants in primary and secondary schools, with a few currently working in nurseries.  They have undertaken the degree to improve their current practice and to add to their career prospects.  Some wish to use the degree as the basis for a route into teaching. Some have even extended it in order to get their BA (Hons) qualification. The two degrees that are on offer are Teaching and Learning, and Integrated Children’s Services.

For most students, they have to balance work, home and student life - they are not your ‘typical’ university students! The Learning Institute’s foundation degree has been tailored to give them the flexibility to work their studies around their other responsibilities.

They will also have a more formal graduation ceremony in the autumn at Worcester Cathedral, as the degree is run in partnership with Worcester University.

“It has been hard work, but very rewarding. I didn’t think I would be able to find the time to get the qualifications I needed to be a teacher – with the foundation degree I can actually learn while I earn!”

Grand celebrations for 'new' teachers!

Trainee Teachers from The Learning Institute SCITT celebrated their success at becoming new teachers at a graduation ceremony at Cothele House, on Friday 3rd July.

The graduation event included a solo Spanish guitar accompaniment by Tom Scoble, a student from Callington Community College and an award ceremony held in fitting surroundings in the Great Hall with a key-note speech led by Mrs. Penny Caslin. All guests enjoyed a lavish meal in the Barn Restaurant and then danced the night away with further musical entertainment.

Trainee teachers were joined by family, friends and tutors of the teacher training programme in recognition of and to celebrate their achievements. Many of the newly qualified teachers take up appointments immediately, some locally in Cornwall and South West Devon and some further afield. It is a very exciting time for them as they put the skills and knowledge they have learnt over the past year into practice.

Sarah Jan Mahomed, a Media Studies student, said this of The Learning Institute: "The course offered by The Learning Institute is brilliant and thoroughly hands-on."

It is not just the students who have enjoyed success recently - The Learning Institute had a very a successful OFSTED inspection, in April 2009. OFSTED looked carefully and evaluated all the subjects offered, including Applied Business Studies, Health and Social Care, Media Studies, Maths, Modern Foreign Languages, Religious Education and Science. Two highlights of the report were the outstanding levels of support for trainees and the quality of training and achievements of the trainees on the 14-19 Diploma courses.
