About Us - TLI SCITT

School Centered Initial Teacher Training (SCITT) with The Learning Institute South West

Our primary and secondary postgraduate teacher training programmes are school-based.  This is the best way to experience all aspects of school life, learning from outstanding, practising teachers.

Courses are delivered over one academic year, usually September until June, and include placements in at least 2 of our partner schools in Cornwall and Devon. Our Partner Schools

TLI trainees benefit from friendly and supportive environments and  personalised programmes. We treat trainees as individuals. We understand that the trainees coming into teaching have different backgrounds and strengths.

Why Train with us?

We work in partnership with over 100 primary and secondary schools; rural and urban, large and small.  This enables our trainees to receive a diverse experience, teaching in a range of settings.

Trainees’ learning in schools is supported by education professionals with significant experience of training teachers (Visitng Tutors).  Our training sessions are delivered by specialist teachers with a current knowledge of the classroom.  Trainees are supported in school by tutors (School Based Tutors) who have extensive experience of coaching and mentoring, enabling trainees to achieve their full potential.

The Learning Institute South West is a well-regarded SCITT with over 10 years of experience in training teachers.  Since starting in 2004, the SCITT has trained over 400 teachers with exceptionally high employment rates. As a part of WeST (Westcountry Schools Trust) and working in close partnership with Southerly Point Co-Operative Multi Academy Trust, The Learning Institute prepares all trainees for a successful career in the modern world of teaching.

QTS and PGCE

All of the Learning Institute South West Teacher Training Programmes lead to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). All programmes meet the requirements of the Department for Education.

Additionally, trainees have an option to undertake PGCE, which carries 60 credits at Masters level (Level 7) in partnership with Newman University.

These credits can be used towards a full Masters degree, subject to further study completed with an accredited provider. Masters with TLI

QTS Assessment

For QTS, you will be assessed through a Professional Portfolio.  You will build evidence of how you are meeting the standards.  This evidence will include observations of your teaching and written assignments.  Your classroom experience will increase in each successive term of the programme, as your confidence and teaching ability develop.
